Mugshots, Criminal History Released For Upmc Memorial Shooter Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz

Officials have released mugshots and new details about Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, the gunman who stormed into UPMC Memorial Hospital, took ICU staff hostage, and shot multiple people—including slain West York Borough Officer Andrew Duarte.

Shooter’s Criminal Background Uncovered

Court records reveal that Archangel-Ortiz had a violent history, including a 2016 domestic assault where he struck his girlfriend in the head with a wine glass while intoxicated.

  • October 2016 – Neighbors called police after hearing Archangel-Ortiz yell “I’m going to kill you b***” before attacking his then-girlfriend. She suffered a bloody head wound, according to police.
  • 2016 Protection From Abuse (PFA) Violation – After his arrest, the victim filed a PFA order against him, which he later violated.
  • 2017 Sentencing – Pleaded guilty to PFA violation and harassment. Sentenced to 3 to 6 months in York County Prison.

Officials released two new mugshots of Archangel-Ortiz—one from his 2016 booking for the PFA violation and another from 2017 when he was incarcerated at York County Prison.

What Happened At UPMC Memorial?

On Feb. 22, 2025, Archangel-Ortiz entered UPMC Memorial Hospital with a bag containing a semiautomatic handgun and zip ties. He walked into the ICU, held staff hostage, and shot three UPMC employees—a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian.

When police arrived, Archangel-Ortiz held a staff member at gunpoint before officers opened fire, killing him.

Three officers were shot in the exchange, including West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte, who later died from his injuries.

The coroner’s office confirmed that Deputy Coroner Michelle Rau and Chief Deputy Coroner Tania Zech responded to the scene and found Archangel-Ortiz dead inside the hospital. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown to determine the exact cause and manner of death.

Motive Still Unknown

Authorities have not officially released a motive, but a UPMC staffer posted online that he had recently informed Archangel-Ortiz that a loved one had passed away.

More details are expected to emerge as investigators continue reviewing the shooter’s history and possible motives behind the hospital attack that left a community in mourning.
